a fascination with process

15th January 2011
Ever since I was a chiseler I have had a fascination with the processes by which things are made and these shots, taken at Colonel's Retreat in Kerala, show the processing of rubber.

The tap:

Sieving the latex:

Adding formic acid to make it set:

Stirring in the setting agent:

Flattening the sheets of hardened latex:

A man carrying latex sheets into the jungle:

The sheets are dried in the sun and then flattened again into thinner sheets and smoked to preserve the rubber before it goes off to the processing plants.

With many thanks to the very patient Tommy who showed me how it was done and put up with me during this shoot.
