A Grand Opening

17th May 2014
Last Saturday I was engaged to photograph the opening of a new autism unit at Newport National School (Primary) in Newport Co. Mayo. It was also the celebration of the complete refurbishment of the school. I have always said I wouldn't do weddings as the pressure to capture the key (and fleeting) moments is so great. So it struck me as a little ironic that having been so adamant on the issue, there I was trying to catch the key and very fleeting moments of the Opening. A lesson there perhaps? Here are a few of my favourites from the day….

The Taoiseach (Prime Minister) arrives and is met by Bríd Chambers (Principal) and Joe McGovern (Chair of Board of Governors)

Meeting and Greeting the staff

The School's Gospel Choir

Two of my personal favourites of the day

The Blessing

The youngest member of the audience

One of those key moments

And another…..

The "pro-life" protest outside the school. The three figures in the foreground help the context as well.

The people who organised the tea and buns..the interior decor of the school is really vibrant.

The end of a long day!
