Birding in Killala

I was out yesterday in the Killala area with Birdwatch Ireland looking at sea birds. A great way to spend a day. I do not have the pocket-emptying equipment needed for good bird photography so I looked but did not capture, as it were. However at Ross Strand this man/woman out with her dog away in the distance caught my attention and I took this picture:




I am really pleased with this shot as I have wanted to figure out for some time how to get this dream-like quality and soft tones. What seems to work best is a combination of the right light; soft, defused light through the cloud cover and a few tweaks in RAW edit & Photoshop, mainly using the clarity control and blending modes.


The second is of an ruin of a house called Summer Hill near Kilcummin and it had a spooky haunted feel to it accentuated by the accompanying jackdaws that added that final touch to the atmosphere. Here is what I made of that:
