everyone sees the Reek

When we were house hunting in the Westport area 5 years ago, one estate agent claimed, "There isn't a house in Westport without a view of Croagh Patrick". Not sure how true that is, but a lot of houses do and we are one of the lucky ones - as any reader of my blogs will well know by this stage. The mountain is locally known as the "Reek". Wikipedia says this is a Hiberno-English word for a 'rick' or 'stack'; however I prefer the rather more poetic idea that it is from the Scots word for 'smoke' as in the seasonal Scottish greeting: "lang may yer lum (chimney) reek" (...'with other people's coal!").
