Beginners' Photography – a fun way to learn the basics.

Do you want to learn some basic camera skills? If you have a point-and-shoot camera or a DSLR are you a bit baffled about how to use it? My goal will be to help you begin to understand your camera and know what it does, and why it does it. In this course you will learn how to take better photographs and have a lot of fun in the process!
Content:
I will teach simple, first principles about:
Composition:
How to compose your photograph so that it has the maximum visual impact.
Light:
How to use the available light to get the best possible photograph.
Exposure:
How to take photographs which are not too bright and not too dark.
Focus:
How to make sure your photographs are sharp.
Some Introductory Top Tips:
Landscape photography, including how to take great panoramas
How to take good group/family photographs
Flower photography
Close Up / Macro photography
And also you will learn:
How to upload, store and edit photographs, simply and easily.
The course will be hands-on and you will be able to put into practice what you learn.
Full Course Notes will be provided
How it will happen:
In this three-hour course we will start by covering the basic skills and then head out to a beautiful local location (weather permitting) to put what we have learnt into practice. I will be on hand at all times to help you. We will then return indoors to review your best shots and you will learn how to upload, organise and edit your photographs on a computer.
Where this will happen:
I am based in Westport, County Mayo and this is where I usually run my courses. However, for larger groups I am more than willing to travel outside the County, if necessary.
Equipment needed:
Please bring your camera with its battery fully charged. Also please bring the camera's manual - if you have it. Most of the photography will be done outdoors, so all-weather gear and strong shoes/boots would be a good idea.
Cost:
For individual tuition, one-on-one: €80.00
For Groups of 2-4 people: €60.00pp
For Groups of 6-8 people: €50.00pp

Photoshop Elements Editing – The Basics and Beyond......
OBJECTIVE:
You take good photographs but to make them great photographs you often need to 'make' the end result through digital processing. This is particularly true if you shoot in RAW format. (If you currently don't shoot in RAW, I would hope that by the end of this course I will persuade you that you should!) This course will help you harness the power of Photoshop Elements as a post-capture editing tool.
COURSE CONTENT:
THE BASICS
To some extent the course will be dovetailed to match your specific needs. However, basic (and some advanced) features of Elements will be covered, as described below.
These will include how to transfer images to your computer, organise your photographs, and back-up your images for safe-keeping.
There will be an overview of the Tools within Elements as well as tips on how to use the Quick and Guided Edit Modes.
However the course will be focussed on using the Full Edit Mode and learning how to get the most from it.
GETTING TO GRIPS WITH RAW
I will be encouraging you to capture your images in RAW and so we will look at processing images in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) which comes with the Elements software.
ESSENTIAL HANDS-ON TECHNIQUES
Rotating, cropping and straightening
Controlling tones and fixing colour tints with Levels
Adjusting Hue/Saturation
Using Selection Tools
Understanding & Using Layers & Masks
Re-touching Techniques
Controlling 'Noise' in your pictures
Adjusting Colour Curves
Sharpening Techniques
Converting to Black & White
Resizing your images for web use, etc.
Preparing Images for Printing
DURATION:
The course will run in six two-hour modules or four three-hour sessions which will be held at Ballinlough just outside Westport or elsewhere by arrangement.
COST:
For groups of 3 or more - €120.00 per person for the six modules
For individual one-on-one tuition - €180.00 per person for the six modules
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
You will get the most out of this course if you can bring a laptop which runs Photoshop Elements.
