Tracing Connie's ancestry

Today we visited Yvonne Vaz Ezdani, author of the book 'The Songs of the Survivors'. The book pulls together the narratives of Goans who walked all the way out of Burma into India as the Japanese invaded during WWII. Very many perished in the process and the event is referred to in Connie's community as 'The Trek'. It is a part of Goan history that had previously been largely overlooked, but thanks to Yvonne that has been rectified. The book is soon to be published in its second edition and Connie would thoroughly recommend it. Yvonne lives in the village of Saligao where Connie's Great Grandfather came from. He moved out to seek his fortune in Burma in the middle of the 19th century, like so many other Goans. The house he owned still stands in the village and with Yvonne's help Connie was able to locate it and reconnect with some of her Goan roots. This is the house:

As you can see it is in need of repair. The current owners live in Mumbai and use it as a holiday home. Connie was delighted to sit where her Great Grandfather doubtless sat on many occasions:

This is another house in this village:
