up, up into the hills

These shots were taken in the foothills of the Western Ghats that run parallel with the Kerala coast. We were heading for our next Homestay which was 1000 feet above sea level. Beyond that, at 3500 feet, we visited the small hill station of Vagamon.

On the way up I spotted this lady as she went to worship at the shrine of India's only indigenous Catholic Saint, St Alphonsa. The lady had the bit of essential kit I must take on the next trip - the umbrella that is, not the sari!

These guys were in fine festive spirit as they climbed up into the hills to visit Vagamon at the summit:
